February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. In honor of this occasion, the Dougherty Orthodontics team has been visiting St. Louis County schools to teach kids about good dental health and hygiene. So far, we’ve taken our “In the Schools” program to Carman Trails Elementary, Kellison Elementary, Uthoff Valley, and Stanton Elementary. We are extremely proud to be involved in this great program bringing high-quality dental education to St. Louis students.
About National Children’s Dental Health Month
Like the name suggests, National Children’s Dental Health Month is all about the kids. It’s important for good oral hygiene habits, such as eating right and brushing regularly, to begin at a young age. That’s why thousands of dedicated dental professionals, healthcare providers, and educators team up each February to promote the importance of healthy teeth and gums.
This Year’s Theme: Sugar Wars
What’s (almost) as cool as Star Wars and better for your teeth? Sugar Wars! The National Children’s Dental Health Month 2016 “Sugar Wars” campaign invites kids to join the crew of the USS Sugar Swatter on a mission to eliminate sugars. It uses fun posters and activity sheets to remind kids of the “2x2min” code: “Brush 2 minutes 2 times a day AND eat healthy for a healthy smile!” Click here to make your own Sugar Swatter spaceship!
Dr. Dougherty’s “In the Schools” Program
With the “In the Schools” program at Dougherty Orthodontics, our team visits St. Louis schools to help educate children on how important their teeth are and how to take care of them. “My parents were teachers, so it’s my way of giving back to schools and the kids,” said Dr. Dougherty. “We talk to all ages, kindergarten and up. This year, we presented to grades K–5, recruiting elementary students all across St. Louis County as official crew members of the USS Sugar Swatter.”
On top of brushing, flossing, and avoiding sugary foods, remember to visit your dentist for regular cleanings—especially if you wear braces.
