Are you interested in straightening your teeth with clear Invisalign® aligner trays? Whether you are considering Invisalign treatment or your treatment has already begun, you may have questions about how to maintain your smile after Invisalign. What happens when your treatment is complete? Answers are provided below.
Do You Need a Retainer After Invisalign?
Many patients will need to wear a retainer to prevent their teeth from shifting after Invisalign treatment. However, keep in mind that every patient is different. Dr. Dougherty will evaluate your unique smile and determine the best course of action for you. If she does recommend a retainer, be sure to follow all of her instructions on how to wear and care for your retainer.
Do You Need to Follow a Special Dental Hygiene Regimen After Invisalign?
It is extremely important to practice good dental hygiene after Invisalign treatment. Be sure to floss once a day and brush twice a day, using an electric toothbrush for the best results. In the first week or two after Invisalign treatment, your teeth and gums may be a little sensitive. Try switching to a sensitive toothpaste and using a warm salt water rinse to ease discomfort. Also, be sure to visit your dentist at least twice a year for dental exams and cleanings. Regular dentist visits and excellent oral hygiene practices at home will help you maintain a beautiful, healthy smile.
